The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is required by law to recompete contracts under the Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) Competitive Bidding Program at least once every three years. The Round 2 and national mail-order program contract periods expired on June 30, 2016. Round 2 Recompete and the national mail-order recompete contracts became effective on July 1, 2016, and expired on December 31, 2018.
On 1 July 2016, Round 2 Recompete and the National Mail-Order Recompete contracts and prices became effective in ninety competitive bidding areas (CBAs) for seven product categories. Beneficiaries with Original Medicare who obtained competitively bid items in those ninety CBAs were required to obtain those items from a contract supplier unless an exception applied. The contract period for mail-order diabetic supplies ended on December 31, 2018.
